The cultural history of the cacao tree in Central America dates back about 4,000 years. The original preparation of the drink called xocolatl in the Aztec language did not include milk but did feature a variety of other aromatic and sometimes intoxicating ingredients. In pre-Columbian times, cacao played an extremely important role in the culture of the Maya and Aztecs. It was used as food and a luxury item – the seeds were sometimes used as currency. Cacao was closely connected with the world of the gods and was offered or consumed in shamanic rituals. This is also reflected in the botanical name Theobroma, meaning 'food of the gods'.
