The common hollyhock is a beautiful biennial to perennial plant with an impressive appearance, easily reaching a height of 120-200 cm. It often blooms from May until autumn with many bright, large single flowers in various colours, from white to yellow, pink, and red to nearly blackish violet, with both single and double flower forms. Commonly referred to as 'farmers' rose' in folklore, this name possibly stems from its ability to match the elegance of a noble rose, yet being simple in terms of sowing, care, and location requirements. Once established, hollyhocks readily self-seed or can be easily propagated through their seeds. They are a great flower for cottage gardens and are also well-suited as cut flowers for vases. Unfortunately, hollyhocks are often susceptible to hollyhock rust. To prevent this, they should ideally be planted in a sunny, nutrient-rich, rather dry, and wind-protected spot. They grow exceptionally well along buildings or fences. Any affected leaves should be removed immediately.
