The sage-leaf mullein is a beautiful, structure-forming wild perennial from Central and Southeastern Europe as well as the Caucasus region. It produces very attractive whorled pink flower spikes, which turn into small nuts in autumn. The faded and dried remains of the seed capsules look particularly beautiful with a light frost in winter, so it is best to leave the withered stems standing over winter and only cut them back in early spring. This lush wild perennial fits perfectly as an ornamental plant in a traditional cottage garden, as well as in a natural garden, prairie and steppe garden, or rock garden. The sage-leaf mullein prefers dry locations in full sun, making it very suitable for the garden of the future, which will likely host drought-resistant plants due to climate change. And by the way, the starchy tubers that the plant produces are said to be edible when cooked.
