White Gaura is a relative newcomer to German gardens, having been practically unknown before it first became fashionable after 2000. This herbaceous perennial is native to North America, where it is found in light pine forests and in the prairies. And yet this is an absolutely fantastic plant, completely straightforward to sow and very low-maintenance thereafter. And it keeps on giving, producing a multitude of delicate white flowers arranged in loose panicles. Flowering starts in July and generally continues until the first frost. Each small individual flower opens for one day only, its pink colouring becoming more pronounced in the evening, before it closes for good. But there are many flowers opening every day, creating a luxuriant and continuous display. White Gaura looks wonderful in any kind of flower bed. With its airy cloud of flowers it works well with just about any companion plants – and looks extremely beautiful with roses. Of course it suits natural gardens best of all, combined – for example – with Purple Coneflower, Scabious, and varieties of thistle.
